I wrote down who I'm actually competing with, so I stop making pricing decisions based on vibes

  • For a while my competitive picture lived entirely in my head, which meant it was wrong in whatever direction I was anxious about that week. Now there's a dated snapshot naming the five direct competitors, two outer rings of adjacent products, and what they actually charge, not what I assumed they charge.
  • Every claim in it is marked for how solid the source is. Some of my first pass didn't hold up once I went and checked, and instead of quietly fixing it I left the correction in, because a research doc that hides its own mistakes isn't research, it's marketing.
  • This doesn't ship you a feature. It means the next pricing or positioning call I make gets to reference something instead of getting re-litigated from scratch every time I have the same argument with myself.
